On September 23rd Mr. Vera, a Mexican immigrant was attacked by three Americans and was severely hurt. He is still alive and can walk, but can’t talk or recognize his family. He was hit in the back of his head but three anti-Hispanic men that have not yet been recognized and this is why the police is offering 12,000$ for any information at all. For now all the leads we have are that it all happened close to the victims home but we cannot be certain. The immigrant is a construction worker that collapsed in front of his house and a few days before he had trouble speaking, walking and sleeping and had a very strong headache. His wife took him first to the Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center in Brooklyn, where doctors only gave him headache medicine and let him go, and later to the Latino Health Institute in Manhattan where he was inspected more thoroughly. Now, with a husband in the hospital and unemployed, she finds herself in a very hard economical situation and doesn’t have money for food or transportation.
Racism has always been a very strong subject in the states, which i find completely useless and stupid. People are who they are because of their family and culture, not the color of their skin. I think it was incredibly stupid for these three Americans to attack an innocent man just because of where he is born. They both live in the same country and follow the same laws and some can argue that there is no difference between the two. In the article it says that this isn’t the first attack on immigrants, and i think a solution has to be found to keep people safe. I feel like it is drastic to have the need of protecting someone in any country, but if it’s what it takes to keep someone safe, we need to take it. We need to keep people safe no matter where they are from and what culture they follow, so that if we find ourselves out of our home we have the reassurance that we are safe.
